First Look at the Chastain Tennis Center Viewing Area
I stopped by the new Chastain Park Tennis Center and got a first look at the new viewing area. The concrete floor was poured yesterday and the stone flooring should be installed this week. Tennis players and fans will have a first class view of all matches being played from the viewing deck on top of the tennis center.
Here are some pictures:
Buckhead Skyline from Chastain Park
If you have driven by the Chastain Park Tennis Center in the past week or so you will notice that they have planted grass all around and even over the new tennis center. That’s not the only thing green about the new tennis center. The project is also tracking to be EarthCraft House Certified which means it will conserve both energy and water once it is built as well as resources during it’s construction. I met with the supervisor of the project today and got some inside pictures of the new tennis center as well as some updated pictures of the exterior and grounds.
The new floor of the viewing area above the center is planned to be poured on Monday and the new sidewalks are being poured this week.
Here are some new pictures:
New Sidewalks Connect PATH to Parking in Chastain Park
Driving north on Powers Ferry Road from West Wieuca you can’t miss all of the orange cones. It turns we are getting new sidewalks on the east side of Powers Ferry Road from West Wieuca to Stella Drive. They began construction on the new sidewalks on Tuesday.
Personally I was an advocate for those sidewalks to be on the west side of Powers Ferry because that would connect the current sidewalks on Powers Ferry to Sutton Middle School. Instead if you are walking on the sidewalks you will have to cross the street twice in order to walk to school if you are coming from the north.
Either way I am really excited to see the sidewalks and hope that visitors to the park will park in the Red lot and use those sidewalks to access Chastain Park and the PATH. This should be a big help to the congestion on West Wieuca and will hopefully relieve some of the stresses of finding a parking spot.
Here are some pictures as construction was just starting on Tuesday. I will post new pictures as the sidewalks progress.
UPDATE:
On my way home today I was sad to see that they have cut down all of the trees lining the Powers Ferry side of the Red Lot. I know they are making way for the sidewalks but I thought they were going to be able to salvage the trees. Hopefully there is a plan to replace them. Here are some pictures I took with my phone today.
Mean Girls 2 Filming at Sutton Middle School
What’s with all the signs up and down Powers Ferry Road in Chastain Park at Sutton Middle School? MG2, Crew Parking, Extras Parking etc… I did some old fashioned investigative work (walked up and asked someone) and found out all the scoop. Paramount Famous Productions is filming it’s new made-for-TV movie Mean Girls 2 right here in Chastain Park. The movie is being directed by Melanie Mayron who won an EMMY for her role in the drama thirtysomething on ABC.
If you have turned on the TV at all you know that Lindsay Lohan will not be involved with Mean Girls 2. Instead Meaghan Jette Martin will play the role of Jo, formally played by Lindsay Lohan in the original Mean Girls movie. Meaghan’s co-stars in the movie are Maiara Walsh, Jennifer Stone and Nicole Anderson.
Filming began in Atlanta July 6th and is slated to to be completed August 20th.
Crime Alert in Chastain Park July 10, 2010
On Sunday Chastain Park put on the 3rd Annual 4th of July Parade and Funfest. The parade was packed with kids, parents, dogs, bikes, scooters, tractors & golf carts. At the end of the parade they had jumpy castles, live music, refreshments and lunch. After eating, everyone jumped in the pool to cool off on another hot July day in Atlanta. Below are pictures from the event and the last photo is the winning golf cart design.

In the 2nd Quarter of 2010 the Chastain Park Home Sales Report looks a lot like that of the 4th Qtr 2009. 25 homes sold in the 2nd Quarter which is double what closed in the 1st Quarter. You can see the average list price and sales price are significantly down compared to 1st Quarter but in line with where we were at the end of 2009.
Tip: If your home is currently listed and you aren’t receiving offers: Check the price. Price Matters! What you paid for it and what you need from it should not be considered when pricing a home.

Update on Chastain Chill
You may have noticed that Jay Memory wasn’t in Chastain Park to play at Chastain Chill this past Tuesday June 1st. After getting a comment on this blog about it I did a little research. I spoke with a representative from the Chastain Park Civic Association today and got the true scoop.
In order to put Chastain Chill on each week there must be a City of Atlanta permit in place. This permit has to be renewed every 60 days which involves a representative of the civic association going downtown and physically renewing the permit. There was a mix-up as to which permit was in place and the City shut it down…temporarily. The city thought they were trying to offer vending at the event which would require a police officer to be on hand.
Anyway, all has been resolved and Chastain Chill will be back on Tuesday June 15 as regularly scheduled. Yay! (note that there will be NO Chastain Chill on June 8th.)
Hope to see everyone there.
