Two Middle Schools or One? Which is Better for Sutton?

March 22, 2012

Will Sutton Middle School located on Jett Road in Chastain Park continue to be a school that our middle school children can attend for grades 6-8?  I certainly hope so, and a growing number of concerned parents are building a movement to keep it that way; and more importantly to create a smaller school and learning environment for our children.

Sutton Middle School

On March 4th, it was announced for the first time that the demographers’ options for creating smaller, more appropriate-sized middle schools were rejected.  Instead, one large middle school was proposed with the possibility of a large sixth grade academy ranging from 600 – 700 students, by APS Superintendent Errol Davis.

The APS Board will be accepting feedback until March 26, 2012, and voting on this matter on April 10, 2012.  Feedback can be directed to apsredistricting@atlantapublicschools.us.

The movement to create two smaller middle schools is called Meet in the Middle APS and their website is www.MeetintheMiddleAPS.com.  On the website you can learn more about the cause, school size concerns, student transition concerns, and research that has been done on school sizes.

A petition has been created to show community support for two smaller middle schools http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/meet-in-the-middle-aps.html.  If you are in support of this, you are encouraged to sign the petition before March 25th.  After two days, the petition has already been signed by over 250 people.

Yard signs are being distributed today.  If you are interested in getting one for your yard, please email friends@MeetintheMiddleAPS.com.

A discussion will be held on this issue at the Chastain Park Civic Association Meeting on Monday March 26, 2012 at 6:30 pm.  The meeting will be at the Chastain Horse Park.
