Powers Ferry Road Sidewalk Progress

September 10, 2010

If you drive up and down Powers Ferry Road near the Chastain Park Amphitheater you may have noticed that construction on the new sidewalks, and the Stella Drive intersection has slowed down to a crawl.  The new sidewalks span from the corner of West Wieuca north to the amphitheater and Red lot.  Once you get passed the new entrance to the Red lot, the new sidewalks suddenly end.

In the mornings on our way to Jackson we typically sit in a bit of traffic at the intersection of Powers Ferry and Stella where cars are lining up for the Galloway carpool line.  In it’s current configuration I don’t see that this is going to get any better once the construction is done, it’s simply the number of cars trying to drive down the same road.  I spoke to a consultant from the PATH Foundation on Friday about the progress of the sidewalks and the plans for the Stella Drive intersection.  In the picture on the right you can see how the sidewalk stops about 60 yards before the Stella intersection.  The current plans show the sidewalks going all the way to the intersection where Stella will feed into Powers Ferry Rd.

They are reevaluating these plans and that is why the sidewalk is terminated where it is.  They are contemplating adding a dedicated turn lane which would feed into Stella Drive and Elliott Galloway Way.  It seems to me that this would be a good solution to the morning traffic flow.  Either way the sidewalk will extend all the way to the intersection.

People visiting Chastain Park to walk and run on the PATH are encouraged to use the Red lot and the new sidewalks will certainly make that easier and more convenient.

Here are some pictures of the new entrance into the Red lot:
