Slow Food Atlanta "Time for Lunch" Labor Day Picnic

August 27, 2009

I received the following press release about a neighborhood “eat-in” that is taking place in Chastain Park on Monday September 27th.  For more information about Slow Food, visit their website

Chastain Park Conservancy is joining with Slow Food Atlanta and families in the Chastain Park area to sponsor a “Time for Lunch” Labor Day Picnic.  This picnic is part of a nationwide effort to call attention to the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act and the need to increase funds to the school lunch program which sets the standard for the food that more than 30 million children eat every day.

The neighborhood “Eat-In” is reaching out to families from the six elementary feeder schools (Sarah Smith, Warren T. Jackson, Morris Brandon, Garden Hills, Bolton Academy, E. Rivers), Sutton Middle School, and North Atlanta High School. They want to raise awareness about policy and funding changes needed to bring more fresh, healthy foods to schools.  Stacey Dougan, parent and Slow Food liaison to the Chastain Park picnic, explained, “It’s simple:  healthy bodies equal healthy minds.  Nutritious school lunches are a critical part of the equation.”

Everyone is welcome to bring their picnic lunch, frisbees, hoola hoops and blankets to the south edge of Chastain Park at the American Legion Post (3905 Powers Ferry Rd.) on Monday, September 7, 2009, from 11:00 – 2:00pm.  Restrooms and parking are available on site.  Satellite parking and shuttle are planned if there is an overflow crowd.
